Record Store of the Month: Second Hand Tunes, Evanston, IL

Johnny Balmer is the third owner of Second Hand Tunes in Chicago, IL. Johnny has owned the store since 2002, when he moved to Chicago from Minneapolis – where he worked for a number of years at Cheapo Records. He has spent his entire adult life involved with music in some capacity – playing in bands, running live sound, as an engineer in recording studios and (of course) music retail.

When he first arrived in Chicago, Second Hand Tunes operated five retail stores in the area. Over time, they began shifting our focus to online retailing and they sold a couple of stores and closed a couple of under-performing locations. They kept their flagship Evanston location – which has been around since 1974. Located near the Northwestern University campus, it has always attracted a healthy mix of students, professionals, artists and progressive-minded individuals (ie: old hippies) typical to the area. They also operate a large warehouse location on the north side of Chicago – which has become the headquarters for the online business.

The cozy Evanston store stocks new and used compact discs, records, DVD’s and other music-related items such as t-shirts, books and (of course) Crosley turntables – which they began selling over five years ago. They stock the CR249 Keepsake and the CR40 Mini Turntable, with the biggest seller being CR249 USB turntable. Stop by and see Johnny anytime at the Evanston location, and help celebrate all things music!

Crosley CR1201A-CH Full Size Jukebox is Discontinued

The CR1201A-CH Full Size Jukebox, is nearing the end of its run. We will discontinue this model later this month to make room for an updated model, due in early May.

A fixture in our line-up since 2008, and preceded by the CR12-10 in 2004, the end of the CR1201A-CH also marks the end of the CD Changer jukebox. CD Changers are increasing difficult to source for manufacturing, and technology has “moved on” to other formats, which will be supported in the replacement jukebox.

Look for more information next month on the new jukeboxes coming to Deer Park soon. Prepare to be impressed with the coming replacement!

Crosley and Deer Park Distributors Moving to MAP-Priced Dealer Program

Later this Spring, Crosley will update its dealer program to reflect some of the changes which have occurred in the marketplace over the last few years. When our current dealer price structure was implemented, no one had heard of an Sellers Marketplace or had access to smart-phones which scan and compare prices among retailers. Because of these changes in the marketplace, we will be reconfiguring our dealer program in April to reflect the realities of the current marketplace. Crosley is evolving their dealer program to support a “MAP” (Minimum Advertised Price) which will impact the bulk of the current items in our product portfolio. The details of the MAP pricing program will be released in April and implemented in early May. Our intention is to enhance the dealer program by creating additional incentives to dealers to stock, advertise and sell our merchandise. Look for a more detailed and specific update in our April newsletter. If you have any questions, comments or concerns, please don’t hesitate to email us.
